Dear Residents,

The year has finally come to an end. As we celebrate our seasons festivities, I would like to thank all of you for your tremendous support given to me and my team of volunteers who have worked hard to serve the residents of Kebun Baru. This was an exciting year with the general elections held in May and the presidential elections in August. Many issues were raised during the two elections leading to what everyone is saying is a new normal in Singapore. Whatever the issues, my main objective is to serve the residents of Kebun Baru and Ang Mo Kio to help improve their lives and make the living environment as pleasant as possible. I will continue to try my best to work towards this objective. I am grateful to the team of volunteers and grassroots leaders who have been working hard to achieve this objective. Without the help of this group of dedicated people it would have been difficult to do the many things we have done in our constituency. I urge residents to come forward and join in the many activities we organize each year. Please feel free to contact me for any suggestions and feedback you would like to give me. You can contact me through my facebook or at the regular dialogue sessions I have with residents.

Let me once again thank all of you for your support and I look forward to meeting as many residents as possible the year ahead. Let me take the opportunity to wish all residents and volunteers and friends a Happy New Year and also let me wish good health, success and happiness to all of you. Thank you.

Dear Residents,

We have now started a new year. It seems that 2010 passed very quickly. On the whole, 2010 was a good year for most people. With a strong economy and with full employment, many Singaporeans were gainfully employed. At the meet the people sessions, I saw less people in financial difficulty and I hope things will continue to improve for our residents this year.

The past year was a very busy one for us at Kebun Baru and we continue with the momentum this year. Many precincts in Kebun Baru were either undergoing or being planned for upgrading in one form or the other, like the Main Upgrading programmes (MUP), Lift Upgrading programmes (LUP), House Improvement Programme (HIP). Even two of our private estates are currently undergoing the Estate Upgrading Programme (EUP) - Thomson Hills is in the thick of it while the Villas NC of the Sembawang Hills Estate, Shangri-La Park and Ellington Square are in the final planning stages.

We also have been successfully supporting our senior citizens through our Active Ageing Programme and continue to engage more and more senior citizens in our constituency. Each of our Residents' Committee (RC) has also actively supported residents’ needs by organising activities and also providing services to residents. We have had numerous dialogue sessions with residents to get their feedback and listen to their views and issues. I will continue to do so to understand residents' needs better so that we can better support you. Chairing the Ang Mo Kio-Yio Chu Kang Town Council (TC) for the past 3 years has been an interesting experience and thanks to the support form residents and staff of the TC, our town council has come up top in the Ministry of National Development Town Council Management Report. More importantly, we are listening to our residents' suggestions so that we can deliver better service to them.

Finally, I have been helping coordinate things at Cheng San-Seletar division after the unfortunate passing of the late Dr. Balaji Sadasivan. I have been trying my best to support residents and grassroots leaders in both divisions. I want to thank the grassroots leaders of Kebun Baru and Cheng San-Seletar for their hard work and dedication in serving residents.

My wish for everyone of you is to have happiness, good health and success in 2011 and the years ahead and I look forward to working with all of you. Please feel free to see me at my meet the people session which is held every Thursday from 8pm onwards, at Block 109, Ang Mo Kio Ave 3. I look forward to meeting residents at our regular events.

Dear Resident,

The year is coming to an end soon. I hope this year has been well for you.

As part of the community outreach, the Residents' Committee (RC) has periodically made an effort to conduct house visits to gather feedback and get to know you and your family. We are making another round of visit to get your feedback on how else we can serve you better.

We hope that you would continue to support the community activities that are organised by our Kebun Baru Grassroots Organisations. I would like to urge you to come forward and participate or contribute to the development of the estate by volunteering your service as a community volunteer. You can approach any of the Residents' Committee or at Kebun Baru Community Club for an application form. I do look forward to seeing you at some of the events I regularly attend at your neighbourhood and the CC.

Should you need to see me, please feel free to visit me at my Meet-The-People Session which I conduct every Thursday from 8pm onwards, at block 109. I will try my best to address your issue.

I wish you a Happy New Year and also wish you good health and happiness in the year ahead. I hope to work with you to make our estate a pleasant and beautiful home in Kebun Baru.

History
Our Club has a humble beginning starting from 1980 as a small community centre housed in a shophouse unit at Block 114, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4. Soon, as more people moved into Kebun Baru, it was obvious that a much bigger centre was needed to provide the residents with more and better services and activities.

In 1981, a fund-raising committee was formed to raise funds for building a new community centre near the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 and Mayflower Avenue. The construction work began in April 1983 and was completed in early 1985.

The centre served the residents of Kebun Baru well. Its multi-purpose hall, with a seating capacity of 500, had been used to hold many activities and functions such as concerts, anniversary and wedding dinners, celebrations of various ethnic festivals, competitions and game practices.

The classrooms on the second and third levels were fully utilised. There were classes for singing, dancing, aerobics, martial arts, flower arrangements, cooking, photography, painting , etc. Talks and forums on health, education and other topics affecting the residents had also been frequently held. There were also classes for pre-schoolers.

As Singapore progresses, and its citizens become more affluent, our Kebun Baru Community Centre again had to be upgraded to meet the rising aspirations of the residents. It was for this reason that the Kebun Baru Committee Centre Building Fund Committee was set up on 1994 to raise funds to upgrade the 10-year-old building.

The major renovation and extension of the building started in early 1997 and were completed on 30th April 1998 at a cost of $3.5 million. With its upgrading completed, the centre was renamed Kebun Baru Community Club, and deservedly so.

Then, in 2005, our community club underwent another upgrading. The building where the ground floor toilet is located was enhanced, ensuring that facilities are available for the various committees to organise activities for our residents. Rooms were created for facilities such as the Malay Singing Lounge, Gym Room and Wellness Spa. No effort were spared in making sure that our Community Club will continue to stay engaged with our residents.
